The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
