Comeback Medvedev Claims First Trophy in Over Two Years

19 of the Russian's 21 victories have been earned on hard surfaces

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his initial championship for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.

The Russian, a ex- number one, has had a torrid season, managing just one win at the big events and undergoing a meltdown at the US Open.

The player's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and struggles with his service game in especial - caused him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually splitting with long-time trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a closely contested three-set victory over Frenchman Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's initial trophy following the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface from March of that year.

Success also means he has won twenty-one championships at twenty-one different tournaments.

"It's the first time I have attended a tournament with my two daughters together, so to win a championship is particularly special," stated tennis professional Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my second daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I achieved when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the past champion, had lost his previous six finals, including in that event in the past months.

His defensive strategy and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted commentators to wonder if his capacity to compete at the highest level was over.

However the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and play positively, reinforced by an enhanced serve.

He came back from a break down in the opening set against the tricky opponent, taking four of the final five games to take the lead.

The pair exchanged break points in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his initial ATP Tour victory, seized the initiative to push for a third set.

Moutet saved four early-game opportunities in a close third set before Medvedev secured a break to fifteen to secure the win.

Fittingly, Medvedev clinched the win with a shot at the net area, with Moutet incapable to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
