Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
